When to Apply


The application period usually starts from 1 October to 1 December for the intake in the following year.

There is only ONE admission exercise for each academic year. Successful applicants will commence their course of study in August. Those who are selected to attend the intensive English Language course or Common Law course may be required to enrol in July.

Candidates who are in the final year of their undergraduate law studies may apply if they are able to fulfill the academic pre-requisites and join us in good time for the registration in end July. As long as academic results/transcripts available at the point of application are submitted, we can make a provisional offer of admission that is subject to the candidate obtaining the requisite qualifications. The firm offer of admission will be contingent upon presentation of official documents to the Faculty of Law at the time of registration.

The following non-refundable application fee is payable for each graduate programme in Law you apply for:

NOTE: Online fee payment mode is not applicable to PR Chinese applicants applying to IBL. If payment is made online, the fees are  non-refundable.

Please refer to the information set out below before proceeding with an online application.

Order of Preference

LL.M Coursework Programme
Applicants may apply up to two choices of LL.M programmes, excluding LL.M in IBL. If you choose only one option (with a specialization) and are not offered, you may be considered for the LLM (No specialization). Please indicate in order of your preference.

PhD Research, Graduate Diploma and LL.M in International Business Law Programmes
Please indicate as first preference.

If you intend to apply for other LL.M Coursework programmes at the same time, you should list them as subsequent preferences, and in order of preference


Eg A: 1. International Business Law (IBL)   2. Asian Legal Studies    3. Corporate & Financial Services Law
Eg B: 1. PhD Research       2. Maritime Law    3. International & Comparative Law
Eg.C: 1. Graduate Diploma in Maritime Law & Arb 2. Maritime Law  

In these instances, the first preference will be considered separately from the second and third preference, if any.

Double Degree in Master of Laws(LLM) and Master in Public Administration(MPA) / Master in Public Policy(MPP)

Please indicate desired LLM (with/without specialization) and MPP/ MPA in your top three preferences.

Eg A: 1. LLM (General)  

2. Maritime Law  

 3. Master in Public Policy

Eg B: 1. Master in Public Administration   

2. LLM (General)  

 3. Asian Legal Studies


If you intend to apply for IBL at the same time, you should list it as first preference:

Eg : 1. IBL

In this instance, the first preference will be considered separately from the other preferences, if any. 
Only where an application involves International Business Law (IBL) and other LL.M coursework programmes, two offers may be made simultaneously to very strong applicants.


Mailing of documents after Online Submission

Please print a copy of the completed Online Application Form after the application is submitted successfully. The form must be duly declared, signed and submitted together with all required supporting documents and application fee payment.

Only one set of documents is required regardless of the number of options.

For PR Chinese who have (a) applied to IBL and/or (b) other Graduate programmes in Law, please make application fee payment separately and mail separate sets of your application materials as follows:

IMPORTANT: Applications will not be processed without an application fee payment and supporting documents. Please allow around 3 – 4 weeks for us to process your application after the application closing date and email the official acknowledgement to you.

Where certain documents are not available by the application deadline, please include a letter stating when these will be available and submitted.

All supporting documents submitted are non-returnable. Unless we specifically request for enclosures/attachments to be submitted via an e-mail, such documents will not be opened or saved if received through e-mails.


Identification Document


Official Bachelor's/Master's Degree Transcripts (with English translation, if applicable, as well as in its original language).


Official ranking / Cumulative Grade Point Average / Grading system


Certified copy of Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree Certificate (with English translation, if applicable, as well as in its original language).


TOEFL or IELTS Score report


Curriculum Vitae/ Resume


One recent passport-sized photograph


Two academic referees’ reports


A copy of the online application fee receipt


Statement for Scholarships (Mandatory for applicants who indicate ‘Scholarship’ under Source of Finance)


Detailed Research Proposal and Preliminary Reading List (Mandatory for PhD programme only and not applicable to Coursework programmes)


Statement of Purpose and Personal Statement (Mandatory for PhD programme only and optional for Coursework programmes)


Letter of support from employer (Mandatory for applicants who wish to pursue the LLM (Maritime Law) / Graduate Diploma in Maritime Law & Arbitration on a part-time basis)

Due to a large number of applicants seeking admission in each application cycle, we regret that we will not be able to attend to enquiries on the status of applications or receipt of documents. If you are concerned about the delivery of your documents, you may wish to consider sending your application via registered mail or courier service.

If clarifications are needed, we will communicate with you primarily using e-mail. It is very important that you provide a valid and correct e-mail address and maintain your e-mail account regularly. We will not be responsible for undeliverable e-mails and their consequences


Application Outcome 

All applicants will be informed officially via email of the application outcome from early April 2017.

Unless granted approval by our University, no candidate may concurrently be a student for more than one degree or register as an NUS candidate and of another university/institute.

Inaccurate or false information or omission of material information or no application fee payment will render your application invalid. The University reserves the right to reject applications that are incomplete or inaccurate. Persons admitted on the basis of inaccurate or false information may be expelled.
